And as any writer would likely attest, the fewer things not related to the actual writing that you have to think about, the better. The more mental space you can reserve for expending on the writing, the better.<\/p>\n<p>This is the magic\u00a0of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/subscribe\/\">writer\u2019s routine<\/a>. They automate decisions like <em>when<\/em> and <em>where<\/em> so that they become instinctual, saving that mental energy for the work. When they find the routine that works, they never break it.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the words of\u00a0some of the greatest and most prolific writers on\u00a0sticking to the routine:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=128239303\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1034 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stephen-king.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stephen-king.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stephen-king-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stephen-king-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v_PBqSPNTfg\">Stephen King<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has released over 60 full-length works of fiction and almost 200 short stories. He\u2019s also created screenplays and written both comics and nonfiction:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI sit down, from 8:00 to 8:30, somewhere within that half hour every morning. I have my vitamin pill and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/best-music-writing\/\">my music<\/a>, sit in the same seat, and the papers are all arranged in the same places\u2026<\/span><\/i><b><i>The cumulative purpose of doing these things the same way every day<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to be a way of saying to the mind, you\u2019re going to be dreaming soon.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/1\/21\/7862005\/haruki-murakami-rhcp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1035 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/haruki-murakami-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/haruki-murakami-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/haruki-murakami-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/haruki-murakami-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/haruki-murakami.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/2\/haruki-murakami-the-art-of-fiction-no-182-haruki-murakami\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haruki Murakami<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, called one of the world\u2019s greatest living novelists by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2000\/may\/27\/fiction.harukimurakami\">The Guardian<\/a> for works like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/ouizY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kafka On The Shore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/x4Jw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norwegian Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/xb6mg2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1Q84<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI get up at four a.m. and work for five to six hours. In the afternoon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/writers-need-exercise\/\">I run for ten kilometers or swim for fifteen hundred meters<\/a> (or do both), then I read a bit and listen to some music. I go to bed at nine p.m. I keep to this routine every day without variation. <\/span><\/i><b><i>The repetition itself becomes the important thing; it\u2019s a form of mesmerism<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was also a noted playwright, librettist, editor, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/write-great-essay-anything\/\">essayist<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRoutine, in an intelligent man, is a sign of ambition.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Webster Schott detailed his observations of WH Auden in a 1970 <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=bFAEAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=PA54&amp;lpg=PA54&amp;dq=%E2%80%9CEating,+drinking,+writing,+shopping,+crossword+puzzles,+even+the+mailman%E2%80%99s+arrival%E2%80%93all+are+timed+to+the+minute+and+with+accompanying+routines.%E2%80%9D+%22wh+auden%22&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=J2ibkqNvnI&amp;sig=RIAoswzvYuOuViKINCcRVPlgIg4&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjzw5um65reAhUN16wKHWWuDooQ6AEwAXoECAcQAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=%E2%80%9CEating%2C%20drinking%2C%20writing%2C%20shopping%2C%20crossword%20puzzles%2C%20even%20the%20mailman%E2%80%99s%20arrival%E2%80%93all%20are%20timed%20to%20the%20minute%20and%20with%20accompanying%20routines.%E2%80%9D%20%22wh%20auden%22&amp;f=false\">Life<\/a> Magazine piece<em>, \u201cHe looks at his wristwatch and says, <strong>\u2018I\u2019m a slave to it. I shouldn\u2019t know what to do unless it told me.\u2019<\/strong> He checks his watch over and over again. Eating, drinking, writing, shopping, crossword puzzles, even the mailman\u2019s arrival\u2013all are timed to the minute and with accompanying routines.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timescolonist.com\/news\/local\/nobel-prize-winner-alice-munro-says-she-has-stopped-writing-1.754902\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1037 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Alice-munro.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Alice-munro.jpeg 804w, https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Alice-munro-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Alice-munro-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice_Munro\">Alice Munro<\/a>, called the master of the short story and winner of 22 literary prizes including the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI write every morning, seven days a week. I write starting about eight o\u2019clock and finish around eleven\u2026.I am so compulsive that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/word-count-goals\/\">I have a quota of pages<\/a>. I\u2019m also compulsive now about how much I walk every day\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/writers-need-exercise\/\">Three miles every day<\/a>, so if I know I\u2019m going to miss a day, I have to make it up. I watched my father go through this same thing. <strong>You protect yourself by thinking if you have all these rituals and routines then nothing can get you.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbth.com\/arts\/327704-25-books-leo-tolstoy-recommends\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1039 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/leo-tolstoy-e1540321826771.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Leo Tolstoy, considered one of the most important writers in history for masterpiece novels like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/wJolsv4\">War and Peace<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/5vaKX\">Anna Karenina<\/a><\/em>. Tolstoy\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/great-authors.albertarose.org\/leo_tolstoy\/\">long list<\/a> of work also includes short stories, dramatic plays, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/write-great-essay-anything\/\">essays<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI must write each day without fail, <strong>not so much for the success of the work, as in order not to get out of my routine.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/charles-dickens-bicentenary-why-we-should-care\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1040 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/charles-dickens-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Charles-Dickens-British-novelist\">Charles Dickens<\/a>, author of 15 novels including classics like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/PBvA\">Oliver Twist<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/XsbMut\">A Christmas Carol<\/a>, <\/em>and<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/q3FWNjR\">David Copperfield<\/a>.<\/em> He also wrote short stories, essays, articles, and novellas:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<em>I never could have done what I have done without the habits of punctuality, order, and diligence.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He eldest son recounted, <em>\u201cno city clerk was ever more methodical or orderly than he; no humdrum, monotonous, conventional task could ever have been discharged with more punctuality or with more business-like regularity than he gave to the work of his imagination and fancy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbdaily.com\/fiction\/made-usa\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1041 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/asimov-e1540321911631.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isaac_Asimov\">Isaac Asimov<\/a>\u00a0 is\u00a0credited with writing over 500 published works, most notably the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/jej8y\">Foundation<\/a> <\/em>and<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/ucau1ab\">Robot<\/a> <\/em>series\u2019. There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblio.com\/isaac-asimov\/author\/463\">estimates<\/a> that Asimov wrote more than 90,000 letters and postcards.<\/p>\n<p>In his memoir, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/6nj4O\">I, Asimov<\/a><\/em>, reflects on his unwavering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/subscribe\/\">writing routine<\/a>. He calls it his \u201ccandy store\u201d schedule, born and cemented from the years working at the convenience store his father ran in New York:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI wake at five in the morning. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/famous-writers-morning-routines\/\">I get to work as early as I can<\/a>. I work as long as I can. <strong>I do this every day of the week, including holidays&#8230;<\/strong>I am still and forever in the candy store. Of course, I\u2019m not waiting on customers; I\u2019m not taking <\/em>money<em> and making <\/em>change<em>; I\u2019m not forced to be polite to everyone who comes in (in actual fact, I was never good at that). I am, instead, doing things I very much want to do \u2014 but the schedule is there; the schedule that was ground into me; the schedule you would think I would have rebelled against once I had the chance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lettersofnote.com\/2012\/04\/c-s-lewis-on-writing.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1036 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cslewis.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C._S._Lewis#cite_note-3\">C.S. Lewis<\/a> wrote more than 30 books which have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold millions of copies: In his 1955 memoir, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/54Um\">Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life<\/a><\/em>, C.S. Lewis details the routine he crafted at the age of fifteen at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Bookham\">Great Bookham<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>[I] settled into a routine which has ever since served in my mind as an archetype<\/strong>, so that what I still mean when I speak of a \u201cnormal\u201d day (and lament that normal days are so rare) is a day of the Bookham pattern. For if I could please myself I would always live as I lived there. I would choose always to breakfast at exactly eight and to be at my desk by nine, there to read or write till one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-valid-location=\"true\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtcatalog.com\/ryan-holiday\/2015\/01\/a-writers-routine\/\">Writing isn\u2019t easy<\/a>.
