When<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0where<\/a>\u00a0do you like to write? Are you the\u00a0same-thing-every-day kind of writer<\/a>\u00a0or can you write anytime, anywhere?<\/h3>\n

Most of the time, I write first. Ideally, that means I drop off whatever kids are going wherever they\u2019re going, and at 8:10 or so I come home, take my phone into the bedroom to charge it, then sit down in my spot in our living room and write until I hit the day\u2019s goals. (I get up a lot to refill my coffee.)<\/p>\n

Do you have any\u00a0pre-writing rituals<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0habits<\/a>\u00a0before you sit down to write?<\/h3>\n

I put my phone somewhere else, and I disconnect the computer from the Internet.<\/p>\n

Do you struggle at all with that dreaded enemy of writing:\u00a0writer\u2019s block<\/a>? Do you think such a thing exists?<\/h3>\n

I don\u2019t, no. I had daily deadlines for five years. I can get some words to come. They may not be the best words, but they\u2019ll be words, and then I can do something with them.<\/p>\n

All of your work is very\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0intensive. What is your method for researching and organizing material that you might want to use for your future writing?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m writing fiction now, so this doesn\u2019t really apply to me.<\/p>\n

Writers have to be master prioritizers \u2014 juggling all sorts of projects, responsibilities, and deadlines at the same time. That\u2019s certainly the case for you. Do you have any methods for managing tasks and time so to not let overwhelm sneak in?<\/h3>\n

I block my time, I make realistic lists of what needs to be done on a day, and I tend to choose no more than two non-writing areas of focus per day. For example, the podcast takes two days a week on average, and then another day might be spent working on promotion, my website, things like that.<\/p>\n

In addition to everything else, you run an amazing\u00a0podcast<\/a>. How has your podcast helped your writing? How has your writing helped your podcast?<\/h3>\n

The podcast helps us meet inspirational writers who keep us motivated\u2014and our new Writer Top 5s<\/a> (like Top 5 Ways to Dictate Your Work, Top 5 Resource Books for Fiction Writers) push us to talk about what we\u2019ve learned over the years, remind us of things that worked in the past that we might want to go back to, and encourage us to look for and learn new things we can share with listeners. And the whole thing keeps me honest. If I\u2019m telling you I turn off my Internet every day, I better do it. If I tell you I only do email once a day or so, I better not be sending you six emails at different times all day.<\/p>\n

What does a successful writing day mean for you? And how do you finish out a day of writing? Do you have a process, or is it just that you know you\u2019ve hit a natural stopping point?<\/h3>\n

I set goals, usually for the week, that fit the way I need to work (revise a chapter, write 1000 words, sit with the outline for 2 hours). And I usually stop when I hit the goal, even if I\u2019m on a roll, because it gives me somewhere to start for next time\u2014and because I have limited focus time, and I\u2019ve usually allocated it all one way or another. But that\u2019s writing. I have trouble stopping doing all the rest of it\u2014the emails, the promotion, the scheduling emails, planning podcasts, planning work time. I\u2019m trying to declare a \u201cshut down\u201d time every day, but it hasn\u2019t been going great. Too often I lose an afternoon and then feel like I need to work in the evening.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0books<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0writers<\/a>\u00a0have most influenced the way you think and the way you write?<\/h3>\n

Stephen King\u2019s On Writing<\/em><\/a>. Elizabeth Gilbert\u2019s Big Magic<\/em><\/a>. Steven Pressfield\u2019s<\/a> everything, Laura Vanderkam\u2019s everything.<\/p>\n

What is your\u00a0advice to aspiring writers<\/a>?<\/h3>\n

You can\u2019t start any younger, so start now, and a lot of people say they want to write a book (or an essay, or a memoir, or anything really). A lot of people start writing. So ABF. Always Be Finishing. And you\u2019ll be way ahead of the game.<\/p>\n
