I had a practice-what-I-preach moment when I read about the adverse health effects of prolonged sitting and now I find it difficult to write any other way!<\/p>\n<h3>Do you have any\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/pre-writing-rituals\/\">pre-writing rituals<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/strange-writing-habits\/\">habits<\/a>\u00a0before you sit down to write?<\/h3>\n<p>Before I write I turn off all notifications and carve out a distraction-free block. I\u2019m amazed people can write meaningfully in coffee shops. I need total focus for creative work.<\/p>\n<h3>What do you do\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/overcome-writers-block\/\">when the writing isn\u2019t coming easy<\/a>? Do you struggle at all with that dreaded enemy of writing:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/writers-block-quotes\/\">writer\u2019s block<\/a>?<\/h3>\n<p>The difficulty for me as a science writer is trying to synthesize disparate threads into a coherent narrative. Whenever I\u2019m having difficulty I go back and reread the source material and see what I can dig up further. I realize if I\u2019m not fully grasping the connections I will remain ill-equipped to explain it satisfactorily to anyone else.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Writers have to be master prioritizers \u2014 juggling all sorts of projects and deadlines at the same time. That\u2019s certainly the case for you. Do you have any methods for managing tasks and time so to not let overwhelm sneak in?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>My twin saviors are the <a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/w250Ok\"><em>Getting Things Done<\/em><\/a> organizational system by David Allen and delegation. I\u2019m privileged to have a staff that can help remove things from my plate so I can concentrate on things I\u2019m uniquely suited to do.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>In addition to your books, you contribute regularly to medical journals, as well as daily videos and posts on your site <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/\">NutritionFacts.org<\/a>. Do you find that your routine or process between your short-form work versus your longer form books?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m currently on a three-year book cycle, aiming to write a new book every three years. One year I write it, one year I travel around the world promoting it, and the third year I do three years worth of videos so <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/\">NutritionFacts.org<\/a> will always have fresh content as I dive into the next book.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Your work is intensely and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/i-research-3-new-york-times-bestselling-authors-spare-time\/\">meticulously researched<\/a>. What is your process for collecting and organizing material you might want to use in your writing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I did a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifestylemedicine.org\/ItemDetail?iProductCode=Evidence-Based&amp;Category=ONLINE&amp;WebsiteKey=5bd6714c-c023-412c-adcf-a68f63dd5607\">webinar<\/a>\u00a0on my collection methods, but don\u2019t recommend it since I think it would be much too technical for most people. Basically, I combine extensive searching of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/\">National Library of Medicine<\/a> database (the largest in the world) with iterative citation searching through <a href=\"https:\/\/login.webofknowledge.com\/error\/Error?Error=IPError&amp;PathInfo=%2F&amp;RouterURL=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webofknowledge.com%2F&amp;Domain=.webofknowledge.com&amp;Src=IP&amp;Alias=WOK5\">Web of Science <\/a>(which contains more than a billion references). Then I have a network of volunteers at major universities around the world that can pull and scan papers I can\u2019t access online.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/seven-books-every-aspiring-writer-must-read\/\">books<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/routines\/\">writers<\/a>\u00a0have most influenced the way you think and the way you write?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I have always very much been inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/chomsky.info\/\">Noam Chomsky<\/a>\u2019s intellectual honesty and rigor to follow to the evidence where it leads, no matter how inconvenient or uncomfortable the uncovered truths.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the best pieces of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/expert-advice-to-aspring-writers\/\">writing advice<\/a> that you\u2019ve ever received, read, or heard?<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Start the day writing. Get up a few hours <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/20-famous-writers-on-when-they-do-their-best-work\/\">before the rest of the world wakes up<\/a> so you can lay some undistracted groundwork.<\/p>\n<h3>What is your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/expert-advice-to-aspring-writers\/\">advice to aspiring writers<\/a>?<\/h3>\n<p>For nonfiction writers, never go into a subject with preconceived notions. It\u2019s too easy to get swept away from confirmation bias and dismiss findings that don\u2019t fit neatly into your developing narrative. That\u2019s the opposite of science.
