Here\u2019s How Some of the World\u2019s Great Writers Begin Their Workdays."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For anyone who writes, it is the absolute toughest and most nausea-inducing moment of the day: the minute you reach your desk to compose your first words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The screen is blank. The cursor blinks and mocks you. Imposter syndrome creeps in. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if it\u2019s just plain bad? What if I can\u2019t produce anything? What about that time I got a C on that English paper\u2014maybe the teacher had it right, and this has all been one long con? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The physical feeling is as real as the thoughts in your head: You feel the pit of your stomach drop. No matter how long writers have been at their craft, nearly every writer we\u2019ve spoken to feels some version of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, those first few moments aren\u2019t pretty or pleasant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But somehow, in the face of those voices and thoughts, the pros get through it. They have to; many of them don\u2019t have a choice. They are writing on deadlines. Or they are speechwriters, and if they don\u2019t write, the event blows up. Or they are in the middle of a contract for a book and article\u2014and their payment depends on getting the words out and onto the page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of what they do is establish clear habits and routines\u2014a set of practices, from the mundane to the idiosyncratic, that allows them to shut up those negative voices and grind out the words. They build systems, some as intricate and complex as any piece of computer software. The best writers aren\u2019t gamblers. They don\u2019t wait for inspiration to strike. If the apple doesn\u2019t fall from the tree, they climb up it and grab it. And they overcome these moments of self-doubt and difficult often enough and long enough that we thought they might have something to tell us about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what exactly do they do to get going?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1) Drink coffee. <\/b><b><i>Lots<\/i><\/b><b> of it.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alright, so it\u2019s not the most off-the-wall tool\u2014but a healthy majority of the professional writers we\u2019ve spoken to use coffee to get the creative juices flowing. The prize-winning historian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/andrea-wulf\/\">Andrea Wulf<\/a> admits that, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t start without a proper coffee made on my magnificent Italian coffee machine.\u201d Former Presidential counter-terrorism adviser and author (and novelist!) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/richard-clarke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Clarke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was more blunt when asked what he does before he sits down to write: \u201cCoffee, lotsa coffee.\u201d And novelist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/liana-maeby\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liane Maeby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wasn\u2019t shy either about the way her writing day begins: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter my 500th cup of coffee, I\u2019m usually ready to go.\u201d So go ahead: get the latte.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2) Silence your environment.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good portion of the writers we interviewed said that silence was golden\u2014that it was the only way they actually got work done, and more importantly, work that people would consume. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/eric-barker-interview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Barker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the author and behavior expert, put it like this: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I\u2019m actually <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/geni.us\/iaTr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writing sentences that people will read,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I need silence. I really need to concentrate. I\u2019d love to be one of those people who is so focused that they can write while in the middle of Mardi Gras, but I\u2019m just not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/andrea-wulf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrea Wulf<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confessed that 100 percent silence was necessary. \u201cIt actually drives me crazy,\u201d she said, \u201cwhen I work in libraries and someone even breathes too noisily next to me.\u201d One author took it even further. For novelist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/aaron-thier\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Thier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the quest for silence was serious enough that he made an unusual purchase to help him achieve it: \u201cI\u2019ve lived until recently in noisy places, so I got a pair of construction-worker earmuffs. They work pretty well<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3) Or, find the right kind of noise.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all the writers we interviewed needed a vacuum of sound. Some actually preferred music\u2014but even these choices were deliberate and a little more out there than you might expect. The consensus seems to be that music is chosen less for pleasure than for a specific purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These writers aren\u2019t just hanging out and bobbing their heads. The music choices reflect what they\u2019re trying to do. Speechwriter and author <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/rob-goodman\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rob Goodman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is clear on what kind of music he\u2019ll listen to: \u201cIf <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I need to drown out background noise, I\u2019ll listen to some classical music. I\u2019m particularly a fan of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Frideric_Handel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the important thing is that the music can\u2019t have words, or else I won\u2019t be able to concentrate at all.\u201d For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/richard-clarke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Clarke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music is a must, usually jazz but sometimes classical, even Gregorian chants.\u201d<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/tyler-cowen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Cowen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> listens to Renaissance music, which even he admits \u201cotherwise hardly ever listen to\u201d but it\u2019s a choice that helps his writing. \u201cIt is less disruptive in terms of rhythm,\u201d Cowen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4) Use the same tools\u2014for a <\/b><b><i>long <\/i><\/b><b>time.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve Jobs has his signature black turtlenecks. Barack Obama wore the same two suits, day after day. Writers can borrow the idea of consistency behind those quirks. For novelist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/aaron-thier\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Their<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get his writing done, he uses the same Bic pens\u2014and not the same <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pens either. Thier has been using the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exact same pens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he purchased a decade and a half ago. \u201cI bought one package at a CVS fifteen years ago and a handful are still good,\u201d he said, \u201cThey\u2019re the clear plastic ones with the ridges, not the opaque white ones. I should write to Bic and tell them. I don\u2019t know what I\u2019ll do when they all run out.\u201d Bic, if you\u2019re listening\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5) Warm up not by writing, but by reading.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/rob-goodman\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rob Goodman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does something professionals do in other fields: He lowers the stakes of the first part of his workday. He makes his start to the writing process less terrifying by reading, not writing, as a way to get into the day. As he says, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My favorite part of the work day is sitting down with a cup of coffee to read whatever book I happen to be reading for fun. Things seem less daunting when I can start off with something I\u2019m really looking forward to.\u201d What could you introduce to start your writing process that would make it less frightening?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>6) Consider writing in the dead of night.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/liana-maeby\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liane Maeby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cherishes the silence that helps her write. But with the chatter of the online world and the physical one too, she finds that the best way to find that silence and get her fiction writing done is to do it when she cannot be reached: in the middle of the night. \u201cI need to be alone to write fiction, for I am a fragile flower \u2014 and the more utterly alone I am, the better,\u201d she admits. \u201cIn the middle of the night, there are no distractions. I can get myself to a place where I feel like I\u2019m the only person in the world who\u2019s currently conscious, and that frees me up to be a little more vulnerable and experimental.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>7) Have the first words ready, or almost ready.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/richard-clarke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Clarke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t sit down to write empty-handed (or empty-minded). He\u2019s thought about his first few lines before fingers hit the keys, so he\u2019s off to a running start. \u201cI usually already have the opening lines or paragraphs in my mind and have had for hours before I start writing on a given day,\u201d he said. It\u2019s a useful strategy for all of us: come to the table with something\u2014anything!\u2014and you know you at least have that first rock to jump across the river. Jumping to the next one will seem less daunting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>8) Make sure you know what you want to say\u2014definitively and clearly.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Pulitzer-Prize winner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/annette-gordon-reed\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annette Gordon-Reed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the key to overcoming those early hesitations and writer\u2019s blocks is to know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exactly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what she wants to say. If she doesn\u2019t know, it might mean that she has to go back to the research instead of write: \u201cWhen I have writer\u2019s block it is because I have not done enough research or I have not thought hard enough about the subject about which I\u2019m writing,\u201d she said, \u201cThat\u2019s a signal for me to go back to the archives or to go back into my thoughts and think through what it is I am supposed to be doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>9) Don\u2019t wait for anything else to interrupt your day.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writingroutines.com\/cal-fussman\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cal Fussman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the trick to getting going is to take the energy he has at the start of the day and just get writing\u2014even if it means saving everything else (including showering!) until later. It\u2019s a strategy he borrowed from Salman Rushdie: \u201cI remember Salman Rushdie telling me how he gives it the first energy of the day. As soon as he gets up, he goes to his office and starts writing. He\u2019s still in his pajamas. He believes there is a \u2018little package of creative energy that was nourished by sleep\u2019\u2026He works for an hour or two and then goes to brush his teeth. I have a very similar approach. Only I brush my teeth before I start.
