And in almost every case it\u2019s the wrong question.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">They all want to know: How do I get an agent?<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">I\u2019ll tell you why this is the wrong question. It\u2019s not because\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/07\/20\/how-to-self-publish-a-bestseller-publishing-3-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self-publishing is the future<\/a>\u00a0or because you don\u2019t need an agent in 2014 or blah blah. There\u2019s plenty of room for those discussions elsewhere. It\u2019s just the wrong question because asking it means you think the process matters.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">It\u2019s like saying: How do I\u00a0<i>enter<\/i>\u00a0the password? That\u2019s helpful sure, but um, you have to have the actual password first. Chances are, you don\u2019t. None of us do at first.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">To make that clear: the password here is to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtcatalog.com\/ryan-holiday\/2013\/07\/so-you-want-to-write-a-book-want-is-not-nearly-enough\/\">have a really great book<\/a>. A book with a lot of potential to sell or win awards or accomplish things that people in publishing find important. Actually not just potential, but\u00a0<i>likelihood<\/i>, real likelihood of fulfilling it. That might not be easy, but it is really simple.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">Jack London put it well\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lettersofnote.com\/2012\/04\/you-must-deliver-marketable-goods.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">about a 100 years ago<\/a>,\u00a0<i>\u201cIf you are going to write for success and money, you must deliver to the market marketable goods.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">That\u2019s the answer for how you get a book agent. Because guess what very few book agents have ever said (and I know my fair share of them): Man, I just have way too many good clients. In fact,\u00a0<i>they\u2019re<\/i>\u00a0always complaining: How can I get more great clients?<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">As my friend Omid Ashtari, formerly a TV and literary agent at CAA and now an exec at Twitter put it, it\u2019s the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/omid\/status\/490698364174884864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shark\u2019s job to sniff stuff with potential out<\/a>. That\u2019s what they do.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">But look, I can tell you how to\u00a0<i>find<\/i>\u00a0an agent. It\u2019s really simple: Pick 10 books that you like a lot\u2013that either represent the style of writing you aspire to, that match the market you\u2019re working for, or have achieved the success you want. Now look at the Acknowledgments sections of those books (or just use Search Inside on Amazon or Google Books) for where they thank their agent. Which names pop up more than once? Which names do you have a connection with? This connection could be anything\u2013you\u2019ve emailed with one of their clients before, you went to the same college, your uncle does their taxes. Rank your favorites and email them each a week apart\u2013per the instructions on their website\u2013until you get a response.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">That\u2019s seriously it.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">Because what else would there be?<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">In 1932, a struggling writer named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aax-us-east.amazon-adsystem.com\/x\/c\/Qu5ezDN6lngZBKuoQ5b9L-IAAAFgb-i9LAEAAAFKAaY_W9E\/http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0876857667\/ryanholnet-20\/ref=as_at?creativeASIN=0876857667&amp;linkCode=w61&amp;imprToken=7-XC53MMlPtxmwWYHx2.xQ&amp;slotNum=0&amp;tag=thougcatal0c-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-amzn-asin=\"0876857667\">John Fante wrote to HL Mencken<\/a>, editor of\u00a0<i>The American Mercury<\/i>\u00a0for advice. Fante lamented that he was having trouble selling a book. Mencken\u2019s advice to Fante is a lesson in the art of the pitch:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-valid-location=\"true\"><p>I am sorry to hear that you did not land your other manuscript with Mr. Sedgwick. You probably ruined your chances by appending your hard luck story. Always remember that strange editors are not interested in your personality, but only in your work. If you tell them that you are down with leprosy, or about to be hanged, it only harrows their feelings without helping them in the slightest to do their jobs. Thus they resent it. When you send manuscripts to editors you don\u2019t know, say nothing whatever. Simply put your name and address in the upper left hand corner of the first page, insert your stamped and addressed envelope, and let it go at that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">He listened\u2026and within a few years, would sell one of the greatest novels of the century,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aax-us-east.amazon-adsystem.com\/x\/c\/Qu5ezDN6lngZBKuoQ5b9L-IAAAFgb-i9LAEAAAFKAaY_W9E\/http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0060822554\/ref=as_at?creativeASIN=0060822554&amp;linkCode=w61&amp;imprToken=7-XC53MMlPtxmwWYHx2.xQ&amp;slotNum=1&amp;tag=thougcatal0c-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-amzn-asin=\"0060822554\">Ask the Dust<\/a>, to Stackpole and Sons. It\u2019s still in print 70 years later.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">#13 in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aax-us-east.amazon-adsystem.com\/x\/c\/Qu5ezDN6lngZBKuoQ5b9L-IAAAFgb-i9LAEAAAFKAaY_W9E\/http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Laws-Power-Robert-Greene\/dp\/0140280197\/ref=as_at?creativeASIN=0140280197&amp;linkCode=w61&amp;imprToken=7-XC53MMlPtxmwWYHx2.xQ&amp;slotNum=2&amp;tag=thougcatal0c-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-amzn-asin=\"0140280197\">48 Laws of Power<\/a>\u00a0is \u201cWhen asking for help, appeal to people\u2019s self-interest, never to their mercy or gratitude.\u201d You have to understand, if you have a good book, offering it to an agent\u00a0<i>appeals directly to their self-interest.\u00a0<\/i>Their job is to take on projects they can sell for a commission. Does anyone ever say: How will I ever find a real estate agent? Of course not.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">But too many writers think they\u2019re too good to make or own a house worth selling. They think the secret sauce is in the format of the proposal or the pitch or the magical introduction to an agent. They don\u2019t have that thing they<i>\u00a0have<\/i>\u00a0to say.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">As Anne Lamott put it, they \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtcatalog.com\/ryan-holiday\/2013\/07\/so-you-want-to-write-a-book-want-is-not-nearly-enough\/\">kinda want to write<\/a>, but they really want to get published.\u201d Unfortunately, that\u2019s just the wrong set of priorities. It\u2019s the wrong strategy too.<\/p>\n<p data-valid-location=\"true\">So if you want to know how to get a book agent, there is your answer.
