Have you ever right-clicked on a word for a synonym that looks smarter? Stephen King would tell you, \u201cAny word you have to hunt for in a thesaurus is the wrong word. There are no exceptions to this rule.\u201d Ever use \u201creally\u201d or \u201cvery\u201d to really describe how very important something is? Mark Twain would tell you, &#8220;Substitute &#8216;damn&#8217; every time you&#8217;re inclined to write &#8216;very;&#8217; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ever feel like your words are too simple, your sentences need more punctuation, or your paragraphs\u00a0must be longer? Ever feel like your readers need proof of your intelligence? And that bigger words, sentences, and more semicolons\u00a0is your proof? Charles Bukowski would tell you, &#8220;An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bukowski also said that genius is saying a profound thing in a simple way. Einstein said if you can\u2019t explain it simply, you don\u2019t understand it enough. Great writers are first great thinkers. Then they\u2019re masters of turning those thoughts into words. Thoughts are complicated. They\u2019re hard to replicate in all the right words. The great writers labored to find the right words, to say what they were thinking, to keep it simple:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[1] \u201cAn honest tale speeds best being plainly told.\u201d \u2014 William Shakespeare<\/p>\n<p>[2] \u201cThe chief virtue that language can have is clearness, and nothing detracts from it so much as the use of unfamiliar words.\u201d \u2014\u00a0Hippocrates<\/p>\n<p>[3] \u201cClutter is the disease of American writing. We are a society strangling in unnecessary words, circular constructions, pompous frills and meaningless jargon.\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 William Zinsser<\/p>\n<p>[4] \u201cThe road to hell is paved with adverbs.\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Stephen King<\/p>\n<p>[5] \u201cNot a wasted word. This has been a main point to my literary thinking all my life.\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Hunter S. Thompson<\/p>\n<p>[6] \u201cIf it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Elmore Leonard<\/p>\n<p>[7] \u201cA man who uses a great many words to express his meaning is like a bad marksman who instead of aiming a single stone at an object takes up a handful and throws at it in hopes he may hit.\u201d \u2014\u00a0Samuel Johnson<\/p>\n<p>[8] \u201cSpeak properly, and in as few words as you can, but always plainly; for the end of speech is not ostentation, but to be understood.\u201d\u00a0\u2014 William Penn<\/p>\n<p>[9] \u201cAll language begins with speech, and the speech of common men at that, but when it develops to the point of becoming a literary medium it only looks like speech.\u201d \u2015 Raymond Chandler,<\/p>\n<p>[10] \u201cThink like a wise man but communicate in the language of the people.\u201d \u2014\u00a0William Butler Yeats<\/p>\n<p>[11] \u201cIt is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book.\u201d \u2014 Friedrich Nietzsche<\/p>\n<p>[12] \u201cOne should use common words to say uncommon things.\u201d \u2014\u00a0Arthur Schopenhauer<\/p>\n<p>[13] \u201cA sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.\u201d \u2014 William Strunk<\/p>\n<p>[14] &#8220;An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way.
